Hi, everyone! Thank you for taking the time to visit my site. My name is Maya Cukierman and I am a second generation Holocaust survivor. My Grandmother, Bela Cukierman (Wolff), was a Jewish baby born in Berlin in 1940. She was very likely one of the last Jewish babies born in Berlin until after the war. Throughout WW2, she moved from Berlin to the Shanghai Ghetto, then to the newly founded Israel, and then back to Berlin. For her 80th birthday we were supposed to meet as a family and celebrate her. Unfortunately, due to the state of the world at the time, we were unable to do that. Instead, my family put together a documentary of my grandmother's life (linked on the video resources page). I had always heard stories about her childhood, but what really resonated with me was watching this documentary. This truly sparked my interest in learning more about the Jews in Shanghai. When I went to look about more on the subject, I realized there was not a lot about it online or anywhere. This is where my idea for this platform comes in. I wanted to create a space where people could come to be informed about the Jewish history in Shanghai. This platform is one with plenty of: media, resource recommendations, interviews, and so much more.
I want to thank the following people for their help, correspondence, and contribution to the project!
First and foremost, my grandmother Bela Cukierman. She is the one who inspired me to do this project. She is one of my biggest role models and I cannot wait for her to have this site and be able to share it.
I would also like to thank: My Mandarin Mrs. GU, Sylvia and Ron Wolff, Daniel and Paula Targownik, Dr. Gellen (Duke), Dr. Jing (UVA visiting professor), Dr. Howards (Wake Forest University), Dr. Loeffler (University of Virginia), and Keira (Jewish Shanghai Refugees Museum)
Thank you for taking the time to look at my site! I am, and will always be, in the process of collecting as many new resources as possible. If you have anything you would like to share please use the contact page on the site!
