Bela Cukierman, my grandmother, was born in Berlin, Germany in 1940. This is when World War 2 began to break out. Bela was born into a Jewish family, and could have been one of the last Jewish babies born in Berlin until after the war. Luckily, Bela and her immediate family were able to escape to Shanghai. They took the Tran-Siberian railway, a railway that traveled through the Soviet Union, for many days, until they arrived in Shanghai.
